Combustion certificate & Cleaning certificate Central heating system
Combustion certificate
The combustion certificate is a document used for the mandatory maintenance of heating appliances for individuals and companies. It includes a distinction between periodic maintenance and an inspection during initial commissioning (new or after modification). The combustion certificate contains information about the customer and technician carrying out the work orders, the details of the appliance and burner, and the results of an inspection of the ‘good operating condition’ and the ‘safe condition and operation’ of the heating appliance.
This inspection includes a visual check and measurements, depending on the type of fuel used. For example, gas pressure, the smoke index, oxygen content and carbon monoxide content are measured for heaters operating on natural gas. For liquid-fueled heaters, such as heating oil, the pump pressure, flue pressure, and ventilation and venting of the flue are checked.
The combustion certificate is important because it ensures that heaters remain in good condition and can be operated safely. Properly maintaining a heating appliance makes it safer but can also lead to lower energy costs and extend the device’s lifespan. It is therefore mandatory to have a combustion certificate for heating appliances connected to the gas grid.
Cleaning certificate
A cleaning certificate for a heating appliance is issued by a licensed technician when the device has been cleaned. The purpose of the cleaning certificate is to demonstrate that the combustion installation has been regularly cleaned and is in good condition, and is vital to ensure compliance with air pollution laws and regulations.
In many countries, it is mandatory to have combustion installations regularly cleaned by a licensed technician. This applies to both private and professional combustion systems, such as central heating systems in buildings and industrial furnaces. The frequency with which a combustion installation must be cleaned depends on several factors, including the type of combustion device, the amount of fuel used and environmental factors.
A cleaning certificate for heating/combustion appliances typically contains the following information:
- The name and address of the owner of the installation
- The name and address of the technician who performed the cleaning process
- The date the cleaning was performed
- The name and type of installation that was cleaned
- A summary of the work performed during the cleaning, such as removing soot and contaminants from the installation and verifying its operation
- Any recommendations made by the technician for the maintenance and operation of the installation
It is important to obtain and keep a cleaning certificate for heating/combustion installations because this document may be requested by the government or other authorities responsible for the supervision of these installations. For example, if there is an inspection to check compliance with air pollution laws and regulations, or if you want to sell or lease the combustion installation.
Tips & Tricks
As a technician, it is important to pay close attention to these certificates and comply with the requirements. Below, we offer 5 tips for technicians to efficiently fulfill these requirements :
- Make clear agreements with the customer about when maintenance will take place and exactly what it includes. This prevents misunderstandings and the customer knows what to expect.
- Make sure you have enough knowledge and experience to carry out the certification process properly. This means that you are aware of the relevant laws and regulations and have completed the appropriate training.
- Use the right equipment and tools to perform the measurements and checks. This may include, for example, a pressure gauge, a gas detector and a flue gas tester.
- Make sure you comply with the obligations that apply to these certificates, such as performing periodic maintenance on time and maintaining proper documentation. This helps to ensure that heaters remain in good condition and can operate safely
- Work digitally and send a digital copy of the cleaning certificate to the owner immediately for safekeeping. It can then be found easily when required, e.g. The owner wants to sell or rent the building.
